Born as Saravanan Sivakumar, the talented actor had to embrace his stage name as director Mani Ratnam, who produced his first movie Nerrukku Ner, felt that the name Saravanan would lead to confusion as there was already an established Tamil actor by the same name.
Not wanting to end up as an actor, Suriya worked at a textile factory for over 6 months without revealing his identity as the son of a well-known actor.
But since his star father Sivakumar was under a financial crunch at that time, Suriya was left with no other option but to star in his first movie which promised to bail hisfamily out of trouble.
